The British media have been going crazy over the “Strictly Come Dancing” Judy Murray’s amazing skin transformation.  She revealed that she had the non-surgical facelift procedure that made her look ‘over 10 years younger.’  The 61-year-old, mother of tennis ace Andy Murray had aseries of Morpheus8 treatments. Judy talked about how the Morpheus8 micro-needling procedure had helped improve her ‘turkey neck’ and make her skin appear much smoother.

Judy Murray Morpheus8

But Judy is not the only celebrity to favour the non-invasive radiofrequency skin tightening treatment.  Britain’s Got Talent star, Amanda Holden has also had Morpheus8.  Amanda has said that “The results have been absolutely amazing.  I’ve noticed a real plumpness to my skin and it’s much tigher!”

Amanda Holden Morpheus8

The other celebrity who has had the Morpheus8 is Kim Kardashian.  She posted a video of herself having the procedure on Instagram.  Kim Kardashian had the new Morpheus8 Body for skin tightening of areas such as the tummy, arms and legs.

Kim Kardashian Morpheus8

How does Morpheus8 work?

Morpheus8 is the radiofrequency micro-needling device that delivers heat using 24 pins directly into the skin.  The new Morpheus8 Body has 40 pins and the Morpheus8 Prime, for the eye area, has a smaller tip for more intricate areas.  The radiofrequency and micro-needling penetrate the skin and fat with variable programmable energy and depth.  This helps induce a healing response; stimulate collagen and elastin formation; and, the contract fat and connective tissue.

What happens during the Morpheus8 treatment?

The procedure is performed using local anaesthetic numbing cream which is applied about 30-45 minutes beforehand.  This helps makes the skin feel numb and makes the treatment more comfortable. Your treatment provider will then select the appropriate, custom settings for you depending on the area being treated such as the face, eyes or body. Then your provider will apply the handpiece to the treatment area and delivers the radiofrequency.  The whole area is treated and some areas may need additional passes.  The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes and costs from $850 per session. We usually recommend a course of at least 3 sessions to achieve the best results.

Is there any downtime with Morpheus8?

Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive procedure with very little downtime.  Patients will experience some redness following the procedure which may last a couple of days. Initially the skin will feel tight and hot.  We usually recommend some post-treatment skincare to help soothe and improve outcomes.  Sun protection following the procedure is also important.

In case this craze has somehow slipped past you unnoticed, let us please inform you: lip enhancement is one of the MOST popular aesthetic treatments being sought after these days. Every age, every gender, every nationality. People are flocking to their nearest injection providers for a prettier pout.

These treatments are most commonly performed with dermal-fillers such as Juvéderm, Volbella, Vollure, and Restylane. However as the demand for this treatments increases — injection providers are discovering new ways to utilize the available products at hand, and various ways to try and differentiate themselves from everyone else. Enter Botox (and Dysport) into the arena.

When used in a particular way, Botox / Dysport can also slightly shape up the lips to create a “poutier look.”

“When used alone, or in combination with fillers, a few units of Botox injected at the lip line helps give a subtle plumping effect by flipping out the lip line, which contributes to the overall appearance of a fuller, sexier lip,” shares injector Lauren Adamski at About Face Skin Care in Philadelphia.

Please keep in mind though, dermal-filler and Botox / Dysport are not the same, and do not bring the same results.

Filler adds volume, which makes the lip appear larger by literally making it bigger. Botox / Dysport relaxes muscles around the mouth (the “orbicularis oris) and rolls the lip outward (i.e. “flipping” it), creating the illusion of a bigger lip — without adding any volume.

For the Botox Lip Flip, Botox is strategically injected into sections of the orbicularis oris to target “only the superficial layers of the muscle at the side of the upper and lower lip to relax the muscle fibers enough to flip the lip outward without affecting the function of the muscle,” says master-injector Nicole Ciasullo, also from Philadelphia’s About Face Skin Care.

If the procedure, which takes less than a minute to administer, sounds complicated, that’s because it is — and should only be done by board-certified professionals.

It is important to see an experienced provider for this treatment because there can be some unforeseen complications with this. “The tricky thing is that if you use too much product, your mouth will not move properly,” Ciasullo says. “Your lips would look really smooth, but your mouth wouldn’t move. Like, if your dosage is too high for this treatment, you may not be able to use a drinking-straw for a few months.”

To avoid the whole not-being-able-to-move-your-pretty-mouth situation, Ciasullo recommends very modest, controlled amounts of product.

The Botox Lip Flip requires about 10 units (or less) of Botox (a very small amount when compared to fillers), and due to the tiny doses — results of this treatment usually last about two to four months. Prices will vary based on your provider and location, but generally fall within $130 to $250 per session.

Cannabis is having a moment.
As laws and regulations on the substance gradually lighten, more research and products tout its benefits for skin care. Along with skin-soothing properties, there is reason to believe that cannabinoids can effectively treat a number of common skincare concerns, ranging from psoriasis to acne.

Inflammation relief is the most promising avenue for cannabinoids in skin care, along with the treatment of itch and burns, according to the Robert Dellavalle, M.D., Ph.D. His study, “The role of cannaboids in dermatology,” published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, explored current literature on the drug’s effect on skin. However, Dellaville noted that more research needs to be done to determine how cannabinoids interact with receptors in the skin.

Several skin care brands have cropped up in dispensaries. Notably, Whoopi Goldberg entered the budding industry with her Whoopi & Maya line in early 2017. Per the brand’s website, its offerings are formulated to provide relief to women suffering from menstrual discomfort, and its body balm and bath-soak formulations soothe the skin.

Mary’s Medicinals, another cannabis-infused skincare line lead by scientist Jeremy Riggle, Ph.D., is another such brand. The Colorado-based company manufactures cannabis products, including transdermal patches and a topical compound to be applied to the skin for inflammation, soreness and pain relief.

The most important things for you to know about it, now?

What limitations exist on brands producing skin care containing cannabinoids due to the regulatory nature of cannabis?

This is a tricky question and is going to vary from state to state as regulators, legislators and public health officials determine their own limits on the amount of cannabinoids allowed in skin products. Obviously, the classification of cannabinoids as schedule-1 drugs greatly constrain their use in all products, not just skin products. It will be interesting to see how these laws evolve especially as more and more clinical evidence becomes available.

How does cannabis affect the skin compared to other active ingredients?

When cannabinoids are applied to the skin they interact with certain skin receptors, that amongst other things, help reduce pain and inflammation following irritation, and they contribute to epidermal cellular differentiation (help skin cells become the type of cells that are needed for optimal skin health). There is also research showing that cannabis-infused products can help with psoriasis, dermatitis, acne (phytocannabinoids are antibacterial, antiproliferative, and anti-inflammatory) and have been found to reduce growth of melanomas and carcinomas. There is still a lot to discover regarding cannabinoids and skin, but the pre-clinical data is very promising.

What does the future look like for cannabis in skin care?

There is a very bright future for cannabis in skin products (assuming regulations don’t completely eliminate the use of cannabis in skin products) and overall skin care. In addition to the receptors in skin cells mentioned above and their associated effects, cannabinoids also absorb UV radiation offering some protection against the sun’s damaging UV rays. Cannabinoids are also precursors to prevalent skin molecules, so they can indirectly contribute to the structure of the skin.

Is there anything else people should know about cannabis in skincare products?

Topically-applied cannabinoids do not cross the stratum corneum, so people who use them topically don’t run the risk of getting high. Cannabinoids are extremely non-toxic and a safer alternative to some of the chemicals that make their way into skin products.

If the idea of endless squats to get your dream thighs sounds like a form of modern-day torture, you may want to consider canceling your gym membership. (Just kidding!)

Alternatively, you could make an appointment with a local SculpSure provider.

Sculpsure is a non-invasive treatment used to destroy excess fat cells, and was just approved by the FDA to treat the back, inner and outer thighs.

SculpSure, a non-invasive body contouring product that was previously only greenlit to zap fat cells from areas of the body like the abdomen and flanks (which are often so lovingly referred to as “love handles”), has officially been given the OK for the lower portion of the body. This approval is important because it means the technology behind the treatment is safe and effective enough to be used on most body areas.

How does SculpSure work?

“It’s a laser fat technology that passes heat through the dermis to directly target fat cells,” explains Sadick. “The heat melts the fat, which is then absorbed into the body.” Basically, the treatment heats fat cells off, which are then naturally eliminated through the body.

During the procedure, the laser, which elevates adipose tissue (the official science word for fat) to a temperature between 42 and 47 degrees Celsius, while keeping the skin’s surface cool while it detects the fat underneath. The full treatment takes about 25-minutes, and results can be seen within six (but can take up to 12) weeks following the procedure. One to two sessions are usually recommended for best results.

As for the cost, pricing depends on the size of the area you’re treating. Typically one SculpSure session averages $1,100 per treatment area.

A unique series of events has empowered this movement.

It started as a revolution to accept bodies of all shapes and sizes.  and implications of female-specific biology, namely periods, a conversation that gained traction a few years ago when we finally started talking about it openly.

At the same time, body positivity activists attracted attention from clothing brands, mainstream media outlets, and other influencers interested in championing body diversity, diverting from the media’s idea of “perfect” in favor of real women facing real women problems, not model problems. Darling magazine was the first national publication to ban airbrushing from its pages. Aerie, a lingerie brand, followed suit, paving the way for several other commercial brands and media companies to make a statement.

The 2017 presidential election was the event that seemed to neatly dovetail these progressive tendrils of activism, which resulted in the inaugural women’s march. A year later, now more than ever, the dynamism of women to be at once loud, proud, and less afraid to speak our truths, and simultaneously soft, healing, and nurturing is taking shape and changing the way we think about ourselves and the perception of women at large.

It’s high time to rethink “flaws.”

When writers at Manrepeller asked What if acne wasn’t a flaw?,lengthy responses full of praise and gratitude were posted in the comment section by women who had, at one point or another, experienced acne. If acne wasn’t a flaw, then the presence of any “flaw”—wrinkles, age spots, fine lines, freckles, you name it—comes into question.

As early as last year, a community of Reddit users—always ahead of the curve, those Redditors—started a discussion about acne positivity after a model walked the Dolce & Gabbana runway with a noticeable breakout. It continued picking up steam when Instagram stars and models with millions of followers started posting their bare facessans filter with captions expressing self-acceptance despite the acne. A cursory look at the #skinpositivity hashtag on Instagram opens up a new world: Women who reveal and share their acne on social media with the hope of empowering others to feel comfortable in their own skin.

On mindbodygreen, Cocokind skin care founder Priscilla Tsai shared her journey with acne, which led to embracing it, whether she’s experiencing a flare-up or it’s under control. In the same vein, Kendall Jenner’s acne didn’t keep her from attending the Golden Globes this year. In fact, when one of her fans mentioned how empowering it was to see her on the red carpet with a few zits, Jenner replied, “Never let that sh*t [sic] stop you!”

2018: The year of skin positivity.

Let 2018 be the year you embrace your skin.

Makeup is fun, and feeling good about yourself Being skin positive goes far beyond acne acceptance. Aging is a perceived flaw that deserves re-imagining, for example. So do under eye circles. Why is (almost) every article about aging, or under eye circles for that matter, involve a step by step to erase, plump, or undo? This kind of language and positioning robs us of expressing differently, of a chance to embrace the self, and to come as we are. Developing a new way of speaking about women’s beauty that’s not judgmental, or implication, would benefit us all.

What an amazing few weeks for Allergan!

In addition to recently receiving FDA approval for forehead injections with Botox, they also JUST got Allure Magazine’s 2017 Award for the “Big Breakthrough” Winner!

Per Allure’s award blurb:

Why exactly do experts love this new hyaluronic acid lip filler? Let them count the ways.

1. “It’s made with a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid than any other filler out there, so it has a softer consistency and is the best option for anyone who wants a very natural look,” says Jessica Wu, a dermatologist in Los Angeles.

2. “Many people find it less painful than other fillers,” says Doris Day, a dermatologist in New York City.

3. “Because it’s so soft, it’s great for smoothing lines around the mouth without risking ridges,” says Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist in New York City.

4. “I can use it off-label to fill wrinkles on the cheeks and chest; other hyaluronic acid fillers can look bumpy on those areas,” says Wu.

A closer look at one of the most buzzworthy antiaging skin care products.

New products that promise to “unlock a more youthful appearance,” “turn back the hands of time,” and “reset the aging process” bombard consumers and skincare professionals on a seemingly daily basis.

While we already know that good skincare is vital to skin health, the question is, are these new products worth the hype?

The chemists consulted for Med Aesthetics Magazine admitted that “the jury is still out on a lot of these new actives,” but data is showing that one product in particular is helping to truly rejuvenate the skin.

Heparan sulfate—an essential glycosaminoglycan in skin health—has been studied for decades.

“Understanding heparan-sulfate’s effect on the dermis function has been a long-term research interest in my laboratory,” says Richard L. Gallo, MD, PhD, head of the Gallo Lab at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. “We believe that because heparan-sulfate is a co-factor for many other enzymes and growth factors in the skin, it essentially serves as good fertilizer that helps everything in the dermis work better.”

This changed when a skincare startup Sente developed a heparan-sulfate analog that could deliver the active into the dermis.

Sente approached Dr. Gallo for testing. “The molecule has a very unique shape—it’s linear, almost like a needle—and it does in fact penetrate the epidermis, dermis and basement membrane,” says Dr. Gallo. “We believe its penetration capacity has more do with its shape than with its size.”

An eight-week study of Sente Dermal Repair Cream cream involving 15 patients, published in the July 2015 Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, showed improvement in skin hydration, firmness, elasticity, barrier function, and global fine lines and wrinkles.

“I was quite amazed at how beneficial a topical application of heparan-sulfate can be in skin damage repair and remodeling,” says Dr. Gallo.
